The Story
The story begins around a group of three islands just north-east of Australia. On the third island, high up on the tower, 2 evil scientists are at work. Doctor Neo Cortex and N. Brio have been mutating animals to create a  huge animal army so they can conquer Earth. Cortex has picked a bandicoot to become commander of his army. But brio has doubts: "But Dr. Cortex! We have not determined the cause of past failures!" warns Brio. But Cortex is determined that Crash Bandicoot will be leader. "Moron! This Bandicoot WILL be my general, and he WILL lead my Cortex Commandos for World domination!"

Brio then places the bandicoot into the Evolvo-Ray. (The Evolo-ray is a machine which makes animals more human-like, and whatever is put through the machine is under mind control.) However, when Crash was put through the machine, it failed as he was too kind-hearted. "Failure again! Capture him!" shouts Cortex. While Crash was running from cortex, he saw a female bandicoot called Tawna. He thinks what horrible things that Cortex and Brio are going to do with her.

Crash bandicoot then crashes through the window and escapes the castle. He then gets washed ashore on N. Sanity Island and takes it upon himself to race through the islands and rescue Tawna from Cortex and if needs be - defeat Cortex. Stick around for the Fireworks, the fun is just starting!

About The Game
The very first Crash Bandicoot in the crash series was developed by Naughty Dog who stayed with the series until Crash team racing. The game was released in 1996 on the Playstation 1 and then re-released on the Playstation network in 2006. Crash Bandicoot was one of the earliest platformers at the time (along with Super Mario 64) and had generally good reviews. This game was so successful that crash became Sony's unofficial mascot for the original Playstation and the game won a reward in Japan.

Every game series has a first game. Sometimes the game isn't as successful as the sequels and future games then build on the already-successful formula. This is what Crash Bandicoot is like. Let me Explain. Crash Bandicoot is a simple 3D platformer which you play as a evolved bandicoot called Crash. You must travel through the three "hubs" in the game called islands to defeat the evil Doctor Neo Cortex. In this game, you must simply complete each level to move on the next one. You physically travel around the island (like in the picture) and then you move on to the next. The first and second islands have a similar appearance but the third island is a more of a mechanical feel to it.

Each level evolves progressing down narrow paths to collect crates and wumpa fruit plus defeating enemies. The levels are simplistic but are done well, which look stunning as the graphics are really colourful and bright. (for ps1 standards that is) Crash's moves are limited in this game as he can only run, spin and ride a wild hog. But instead of just running through a level, some levels offer some alternative game play such as escaping from a Indiana-Jones like bolder and riding a wild hog. This is only for about 4 levels of the entire game, but fortunately the sequels to this game improved this.

The game has 27 levels which include 19 normal levels, two locked levels (which you need to collect a key to unlock each level) and six boss levels. All of the levels in the game have a particular theme which starts off going through tribal villages, jungles, ancient ruins which then eventually leads to castles labs in Cortex's mansion. Generally speaking, the music in the levels are quite basic, and are not really as good as crash 2's or crash 3's soundtrack. But Mutato Muzika knew this when they finished the soundtrack, so that's how they improved it.

In Crash Bandicoot there aren't many items to collect, compared to later games. In the majority of the normal levels,  (not the boss levels) there is a a clear gem, which you gain by collecting all the crates in the level without losing a life. (This is extremely difficult at first) But some of the levels which do not contain clear gems contain a coloured gem instead. (These open new paths in existing levels) Crates are scattered all over the levels which come in many varieties. The crates that appear in each level varies.  A key is found twice in the game, which opens two new levels.

Boss 1 - Papu Papu
This first boss is pretty simple really. What you have to do is jump to avoid Papu Papu swinging, and then jump onto his back when Papu Papu whacks his club onto the floor, which will cause him to lose one hit point. Repeat this two times to defeat Papu Papu.

Boss 2 - Ripper Roo
Ripper Roo isn't a difficult boss, but you need to get the timing right to win. What you basically do is to activate a TNT when Ripper Roo jumps onto a nearby platform. Watch for a pattern on each round and time when the TNT crate explodes.
Boss 3 - Koala Kong
Koala Kong will throw boulders at you, so to dodge them, either spin, jump or move out of the way of the boulders. Then on the 2nd round, TNT's start falling, so make sure you are well away from the blast radius, while avoiding the rocks. Repeat 4 times to defeat this boss.
Boss 4 - Pinstripe
Pinstripe will shoot you will his Tommy gun. The first time Pinstripe walks over the room, you can spin him three times, which makes him lose 3 of his 6 lives. For the next three hits, protect yourself from the shots by hiding behind the objects in the room and then spin pinstripe when his gun malfunctions.
Boss 5 - N.Brio
Do not be scared by the 9 hit health bar - because unlike previous bosses, N.Brio has two stages in this boss. For the first stage, jump on the green acid blobs and then dodge his red potions until he has 3 lives reminding. Brio then turns into a green monster. To defeat him, simply jump onto him using the blocks that fall from the ceiling.
Boss 6 - Dr Neo Cortex
For this boss, you need to do more dodging than attacking. To defeat Cortex, simply dodge the blue and purple shots from his laser shots and then spin the green shots back at him. Be careful when he has 2 shots remaining as he repeatedly shoots loads of the purple laser shots! Repeat 6 times.

My Review

Graphics 79% - Well for a good released in 1996, the Graphics are good for PS1 standard. Most of the levels look pretty nice but there's is hardly any graphical glitches so the score doesn't go down as much.

Music 73% - Compared to the sequels, the music in this game is quite basic and hasn't got much depth. But its a good start for the series with lots of variations in the music.

Gameplay 84% - Well this part is quite strong for this game. If you want a game with simple but fun gameplay, look no further. Crash Bandicoot may not have many vehicles or different modes of gameplay, but never-a-less crash 1 is a fun game.

Lifespan 81% - With 3 islands to go through, which has 27 levels. It won't take too long to complete, but collecting and hunting down all the gems makes the game last a lot longer.

Ok, Crash 1 was the original game of the series and its not as good as the sequels. But it's still a charming, good platformer and any players who like platformers should snap this title up.                                                                                               Final Score: 82%
